Police: Man claimed God told him to steal car

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Police said a man who smashed a window at a car dealership claimed he was following a higher calling. Police said a 36-year-old man was collared by a security guard at Freedom Dodge before he could get inside the showroom. WLEX-TV reported the man told the guard that God wanted him to steal a Dodge Charger.

When police arrived, the suspect initially told them his name was “Seven.”

The man faces charges including criminal mischief.

School ban for Miss Sexy trousers

A school has banned popular Miss Sexy trousers – because they are too revealing.

David New, headteacher of Nailsea School in North Somerset, has vetoed Miss Sexy trousers for having visible zips and being too tight.

Ten offending pupils have been hauled into his office for wearing the offending trousers.

Even though I agree that they should try to keep clothing that are revealing from being worn in school, but this is quite stupid. There will never be clothing that will be just right, and not show anything, otherwise you will have to wear cloths that hide everything. Which is not a good thing for most people.

Bad Drivers? Blame their Genes.

WASHINGTON – No need to curse that bad driver weaving in and out of the lane in front of you — he cannot help it, U.S. researchers reported on Wednesday.

They found that people with a particular gene variant performed more than 20 percent worse on a driving test than people with a different DNA sequence.

The study may explain why there are so many bad drivers out there — about 30 percent of Americans have the variant, the team at the University of California Irvine found.

“These people make more errors from the get-go, and they forget more of what they learned after time away,” Dr. Steven Cramer, who led the study published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, said in a statement.

Cramer and his team tested 29 people — 22 without the gene variant and seven who had it — asking them to drive 15 laps on a simulator and then repeat the task a week later.

To their surprise, they found that those with the mutant gene did worse, consistently.

The gene controls a protein called brain-derived neurotrophic factor, which affects memory.

The team was not really looking for insights into driving but chose the driving test because it uses common skills.

“I’d be curious to know the genetics of people who get into car crashes,” Cramer said. “I wonder if the accident rate is higher for drivers with the variant.”

Russian Road Roulette

SOFIA , the chief prosecutor’s office said Thursday.

Known as ‘Russian road roulette’, the driver must jump red lights at busy intersections at high speed and not crash into any other cars or pedestrians, according to local media reports. Onlookers also gamble on the result.

Prosecutors launched their investigation after media reported the new game had been held at night at busy crossroads in Sofia since the summer.

In June, two people died after a motorcyclist crashed into an onlooker at a similar rally on Sofia’s ring road.

“Every time we receive a signal for such an unregulated race, we send patrols,” Commissioner Vanio Stoevski, head of the Sofia Road Police, told Reuters. Since the deaths in June, police have monitored roads where such races are typically held.

Local media report that participants in the ‘Russian road roulette’ are informed via text messages of the venue for that particular night — depending on the presence of police.

It may be BYOB as fewer firms plan holiday parties

SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. economy may have begun to recover in 2009, but holiday office parties are sinking even further into the dumps.

Fewer companies plan to break out the bubbly this season than in 2008, at the height of the global financial crisis, according to a survey from Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

Only 62 percent of about 100 companies that responded to the survey were planning holiday parties this year, down from 77 percent a year ago and 90 percent in 2007, as recession-era cuts extended from benefits and profit-sharing to Santa hats and disc jockeys.

“For companies that have recently announced layoffs or other significant cost-cutting measures, such as wage freezes, it would be difficult to justify, let alone get in the mood for a holiday party,” said John Challenger, the firm’s chief executive officer.

Challenger said it sends out roughly 1,000 survey requests to human resource executives at a wide variety of U.S. companies. Each year, roughly 100 respond on the firm’s anonymous website.

Transvestites on trial for theft

Five Filipino transvestites have gone on trial in Shanghai, accused of drugging men with adulterated foods before robbing them in a city with a reputation for an adventurous nightlife.

Apparently further in the story, the men that stole, used the credit cards and such to gain gold and other things.

Ban on tight trousers for women?

Hey gals, would you like to wear dresses all the time? I don’t think so. Well apparently in Indonesia, they are banning trousers for women, and wants all women to wear dresses! If that isn’t enough, anyone that wears pants, won’t be allowed to go to government offices for stuff.

Yours for $3,500 — the horsehair fountain pen

For those not constrained by these austere times, a German luxury goods company is offering a limited edition fountain pen, adorned with pleated horsehair and starting at $3,500.

Faber-Castell, which has been in business since 1761, started its “Pen of the Year” in 2002 and each year has used a different type of rare material, including mammoth ivory, 200-year-old olive tree wood, and Indian satin wood.

The weaving of horsehair is a highly skilled, intricate and time-consuming process and one of Germany’s leading experts in the art, Dorit Berger, has been working on the pens.

Horsehair presents a special challenge. The tail hairs of a horse are relatively stiff and short, and so cannot be spun to a continuous thread. They cannot be woven in a conventional way.

Speaking in the office of luxury goods store William & Son in London’s upscale Mayfair district earlier this month, Count Anton-Wolfgang von Faber-Castell, CEO of the company, said the pens are increasingly sought after by collectors.

“It is becoming more and more difficult to put together a collection of all of the Pens of the Year,” he told Reuters.

William & Son’s Store Manager Roy Connor said he believed the horse-racing fraternity would be a strong market for the horsehair pen, which is plated in platinum and has an 18-carat gold nib.

The standard model costs $3,500 from the shop, but if a client wants a pen made with the tail hair of his own horse, a bespoke order can be carried out for around $8,000.
